Life Lately + NYC

January 25, 2016  //  Travel

Hi guys!!! I hope you had a great weekend! Sorry I’ve been a bit MIA the last few days, but things have been very atypical around here and my schedule has been quite thrown off. I’m currently curled up in bed with a nasty cold that I felt coming on the last few days, but finally took me down today. I started taking oil of oregano and turmeric, and although my appetite has been pretty low, I’ve had lots of warm fluids like chicken soup and teas. Hopefully it’s on its way out – I am the worst sick person because I am soooo impatient and antsy to get back in life.Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

So last week, I headed to NYC for a last minute, unplanned trip because I was invited to be interviewed on Fox by Bill O’Reilley on The O’Reilley Factor! I flew from LA because I had meetings there beforehand, and was starving before the flight. I NEVER eat plane food because I can never know what’s in it, so I decided to grab something before hopping on the plane. I love Lemonade at LAX because it’s so much cleaner than most “fast food” places. I had a really good chicken soup in a tomato broth with olives and a romaine salad dressed with lemon vinaigrette and lemon salmon. Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 presetThe topic of the interview was the Forbes 30 Under 30 announcement and questions about “success at a young age”. I was a bit nervous walking in because I had gone down the rabbit hole of Googling “Bill O’Reilley’s most controversial moments” the night before and needless to say, he can be…tough. Yes, I am the person that googles worst possible scenarios – you don’t even want to know what I’ve been Googling about this head cold I’ve currently got. But, it was all for nothing because I had SUCH a great time and he was a super nice guy. The interview was pretty quick and I was in and out and quite relieved to be finished.

Afterwards, boyfriend planned the best night ever because he last minute scored 2 front and center tix to Hamilton, which I’ve been DYING to see. We went from Fox to an early dinner at Quality Meats. I forgot to photo my meal, but in case you were wondering I had tuna tartare to start and a filet with steamed spinach. Next, we went to the theater, and I can happily report Hamilton was absolutely incredible!! If you have the chance to go, do not miss it! Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

Now, I want to follow up on my last post with some links for you to my favorite brands/forms of the superherbs I talked about because so many of you guys left questions in the comments section! Here are the deets:

ASTRAGALUS: This is my favorite brand because it’s alcohol free. I like the liquid form of this because the body absorbs it easier and faster than powdered or capsulated formats. I put 30 drops – yes, 30 – in warm water with lemon twice a day and drink it as a tea when I use this.

RHODIOLA: I take a capsule form of this, and this one is my go-to because it’s organic, gelatin free, and a whole root extract. I take one in the morning with breakfast and one at dinner when I’m taking this.

ASHWAGANDHA: I loooooove this stuff! I take 2 capsules twice a day (morning and night) when I’m feeling extra run down, and 1 twice per day when I feel a bit better.

REISHI: I drink this as a hot chocolate and I use this brand because it’s concentrated to ensure easy absorption and there’s only one ingredient – reishi! I heat 1/2 tsp with about 1.5 cups unsweetened coconut milk and scoop of cacao (I can be heavy handed on the cacao, but I’d say it’s about 1 tsp). I add a few drops of vanilla stevia and whisk until it’s frothy and delicious.

GINGER: I just use the plain ole root for this and I boil a few slices in water with lemon and drink it as a tea. I also add it to juices and smoothies if I’m making them that day.

OREGANO: I take oil of oregano in capsule form all the way because I just can’t get it down any other way. I do 2 of these when I feel sick (like right now).

TURMERIC: If I’m juicing, I’ll use the root, but since I don’t juice every day and I don’t alway see it at Whole Foods, this brand is my all time favorite. It’s organic, it’s really pure, and it also contains ginger which is great.

CHAMOMILE: I told you guys my favorite way to do this is tea with a little coconut milk at night to make a super soothing nightime latte! This brand is my ride or die because I looooooove the flavor. Note, it has lemon in it too (which is why I love it) so if you want a straight up plain chami tea this isn’t it. But try this one, it’s great and it’s organic.

ARNICA: I most often use this externally and rub arnica cream on areas of pain or soreness. This is the one I’ve used forever and I really like it because I get quick relief and it also contains MSM, which is also a great anti-inflammatory pain reliever.

GINSENG: I take this the exact same way I take Astragalus and for the exact same reason. Ginseng is aborbed faster and better in liquid form and I like this brand because it’s certified organic, nicely concentrated, and very pure.

If you have any other questions, feel free to leave them below! I hope you guys had a great weekend and that none of you are sick like I am!! Tell me what you guys have been up to!

I’m SO excited to see your interview on The O’Reilly Factor. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years ago while at the Fox News building, and Bill O’Reilly really is a nice guy and much more low key than how he is on his show. And no, I’m not ashamed or afraid to say that I watch The O’Reilly Factor nightly (I feel like people who hate O’Reilly are the ones who have never tuned in to his show more than once or ever – just saying).

I’m getting over a cold as well (knocked me out all last week, haha). Totally better now, and I appreciate your wellness tips! Wishing you a quick, full recovery, dear Annie! Hope you’re able to fully rest up this week XX

Thanks for sharing your herbs. I also take similar herbs, but the Reishi I have is much more expensive so I think I’ll switch to your brand!!

  • Jesse

Congrats on your interview! I’m so glad it went well and he was nice! Hamilton sounds awesome, what a treat and how sweet of your man to hook it up with tickets! 🙂 Hope you feel better soon so we get to see more great posts!

I am excited to see some make-up tutorials and I’d love to hear more about your work-outs. I feel like I “trust”your opinions for health and beauty recommendations than just a random person doing a video on YouTube 🙂 What do you think about organic makeup? I don’t use it but I saw that Gwyneth Paltrow is backing an organic beauty line and wondered what you thought of products like that…feel better! 🙂

hope you feel better! i travel back to New York a lot to catch Giant games with my dad and Godfather and got sick during two of those trips this year i feel for you it cut into my work at the worst time possible as well. I love watching Bill O’reily when is your interview airing?! Also i’ll try some of those super herbs I’m gonna google to see if they sell them in newport beach i haven’t used any of those yet.

  • Lauren Herrick

Hi there, I hope you feel better! Also, as a NYer, I hope you enjoyed your time here! I just wanted to say thanks for informative posts like these. Many blogs I read have the same old information that I already know, and Blawnde is one of the few blogs I have found so far that always provides new and interesting health related information!

Do you have any advice about headache remedies? I get headaches occasionally, I think from staring at the computer all day during work. Any tips would be greatly appreciated 🙂

  • Missy

Congrats on this exciting interview! I read an article about you on Mind Body Green this morning and was wondering if you could share that banana bread recipe you mentioned?

  • Pia @ Gymbags and Jetlags

Quality Meats is MY FAVOURITE. And I’m so jealous you got to see Hamilton! And congrats on the interview! Ah, so many things to be excited about haha. I’ve been really into soups lately too and having just come back to school in the UK from NYC, I avoided all the plane food possible. I hope you’re feeling better!
    xx, Pia

I’m keeping my eyes peeled for the interview, Annie – glad he was nice and that it went well!
I totally know what you mean about airplane food by the way lol. I try and avoid it as much as I can but I have to say that Thai airways has some good stuff.
Thanks for the links to the brands you use – so helpful when there’s a world of choice out there.
Hope you feel better soon x

Thank you!! I will update you guys when the show is airing!!

I find a lot of Asian airlines have cleaner food! On my way to Thailand I flew Cathay Pacific and we ordered gluten free meals and got a really simple clean dish of salad, grilled chicken breast, and rice. no sauces or questionable dressings/marinades. X

  • blawnde

Thank you!! QM is the bomb – such great food! X

  • blawnde

Yes I will post it on the blog soon! X

Hi! You’re so welcome! Thank YOU for reading! Feverfew is a really amazing herb that is incredible for headaches. This blend http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JCETFY2?psc=1 is my favorite because it also has magnesium and I find that to be a muscle/nervous system relaxant so I don’t feel so panicked and tense when my head hurts. Try it and see what you think!

  • blawnde

Arnica tablets are amazing in place of Advil! It’s all I use anymore.

For the antibiotics, I would DEFINITELY give it another day or two to see if things improve. If not, I wouldn’t hesitate to give her the antibiotics after that. BUT, I would also make sure she takes in conjunction with a really high grade probiotic and continue taking it for several weeks after the antibiotics are finished.

  • blawnde

Yes this one is great!! X

Ahh I hope you’re feeling better!! Mine was very short lived, but definitely no fun! So cool you got to meet Bill! He really is way cool and nice. X

Would love to hear you weigh in on this Annie. I am trying to transition my beauty routine to more natural products–with brands like Juice beauty and beauty counter it is getting easier to find products that are natural and perform like top brands. would love to hear your thoughts and what you have tried!

  • Honestly Fitness

That’s such a valid point, Annie, and interesting observation. Definitely true and now that you pointed that out, I’m thinking back to all the meals I had on Asian airlines and they are definitely cleaner than ones on Western airlines x
